Back in 2010 it had been over thirty years that Coach Craig Anderson had organized and managed the summer baseball programs in Pine Island. This included all levels of baseball from tee ball through Babe Ruth and Legion ball. During this time Coach Anderson’s hard work and countless hours of dedication to the game of baseball in Pine Island were the main catalyst behind PI baseball. These programs provide opportunities for the youth of the Pine Island community to build a foundation of skills starting out at the tee ball program level and extending through the high school years. Through the years many of our young adults have moved on to apply the teaming skills and lessons learned from their baseball experiences to their every day lives. Many have also had the opportunity to participate in varying levels of competitive baseball beyond high school.
Coach Anderson recognized that he was entering the later stages of his coaching career and wished to leave behind a strong baseball foundation in the Pine Island community. The youth baseball program had also grown to the point where it required more than one individual to oversee. During the fall of 2010 a group of community volunteers that wished to see today’s youth continue to enjoy the game of baseball got together with Coach Anderson and started working on a plan to ensure that the strong baseball tradition in Pine Island continues on. The Pine Island Baseball Association (PIBA) was established to build upon the strong tradition of Pine Island summer ball programs. PIBA is strictly a volunteer organization established to promote the game of baseball in the community of Pine Island.
The initial group of volunteers formed a PIBA board, drafted a mission statement, and established a set of bylaws and articles of incorporation. The PIBA board meets regularly and conducts business as a non-profit organization that is in place for the betterment of youth baseball activities in the community. PIBA organizes summer programs from tee ball up through Legion. Both in-house and traveling leagues are conducted.
For information on PIBA and how you can help, please visit the PIBA website at www.pibaseball.org or email one of the board members. The strength of PIBA is realized through the collaboration and teamwork of many contributing to a common goal of promoting youth baseball in our community. Through community and volunteer support and PIBA’s commitment, we will continue to build upon the strong, fun tradition of summer ball that has been established in Pine Island while looking for ways to grow and improve the programs. The PIBA board is always looking forward to the next fun and exciting summer youth baseball season!
